Harper Lee

The book plays in the southern US in the 1930's.
Harper Lee uses unforgettable characters which explore civil rights and racism in a segregated town somewhere in Alabama.
The novel is told trough the eyes of Scout Finch. Whilst the story goes on you learn everything about her family, father Atticus Finch and her brother Jem, and her family and her life in the small town Maycomb. Atticus is an attorney and he desperately strives the innocence of Tom Robinson, a black man who is unjustly accused of rape.
An other important character you learn about in the novel is Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor. Scout and Jem are very curious about him since he wasn´t seen in a very long time and they wanna see him very desperately. In the end he saves them from being killed.

To kill a mockingbird is a so called "Coming of Age" novel, which is my favorite novel genre.
The main characters are Scout (Jean-Louise), Atticus and Jem Finch, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, Bob and Mayella Violet Ewell, Calpurnia and Dill Harris.

I did a little research for you and now I can tell you a few thematic topics, motifs and important aspects.
To kill a mockingbird is a book about prejudice, civil rights, racism, defining bravery, perception, integrity and the inconsistency of humanity. Also an important topic is gender roles and the women's roles in the South as well as education and which is better the education in the classroom  versus small town education.
Repeating and important symbols are mockingbirds, snow, rebirthing fire and birds in general.
There are three important aspects of to kill a mocking bird:

  • The title refers to a local belief (introduced early in the novel and referred to later) that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Lee is implying that the townspeople are responsible for killing and that doing so was a sin and not only unjust and immortal. Won't tell you here who is going to die...no spoilers here ;)
  • The events take place while Scout is a young child, but the sophisticated vocabulary and sentence structure of the story indicate that scout tells the story many years later.
  • The unusual aspect about this book is that it is  both a examination of racism and a bildungsroman.  The coming of age story is the frame in which a very serious social problem is examined.
Well for more information or a deeper analysis, just ask google you can learn everything about this book on so many amazing sites.

I'll give this book a 9 out of 10 or maybe even a 10  :)
It is easy read and such a fun too. No difficult words or multi-clause sentences. It's just having fun while reading and not a Struggling through with the thought I must finish this
A MUST READ for everybody ;)

Okay next up is the - book you can read in one day
This category can mean a very thin book or one that is sooo amazing and exciting that you cant stop reading.
I have read a few book in one day...but not so many and I actually cant remember which. So fast. I thing I finished Twilight in one day and a few others...well lets see:
  1. The importance of being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
  2. Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw
  3. A doll's house by Henrik Ibsen
  4. Slaughterhouse five by Kurt Vonnegut
  5. Of mice and men by John Steinbeck
  6. The picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde
  7. The stranger by Albert Camus
  8. The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy By Douglas Adams
  9. Animal farm by George Orwell
  10. A room of one's own by Virginia Woolf

Well many of them are probably hard to read in one day...but I think it is feasible.
I choose a book which is short enough to finish in one day and it is: The picture of Dorian Grey
